Why do so many people believe that God wants us to be perfect?

If God wanted us to be perfect, would he not have created us that way? I believe that in his eyes we are perfect, as long as we have Love in our hearts and intentions. I think we're the ones that see ourselves and others as imperfect..it's depressing, really.
