What To Do With An Unresponsive Student?

Have you tried talking to him? Talking...not griping (as teachers we have to remember there is a huge difference). I am amazed at what an impact this has with my very troubled students. Just ask him how things are going. What does he do with mom and/or dad? Does he have any pets? etc. This usually leads you to some sort of issue that may be bothering him or may have effected him in the past. Six years old is very young to start this behavior. I have only known of one other student like this, this young and he was basically raised with fighting, drugs, mom and dad going in and out of prison, even shootings in his home. These are HUGE emotional issue warning flags in my opinion.
