Do you agree that for the most part, imprisoning people is stupid? Punish them in a way that benefits society?

What if these people refuse to work? Or, since they have so much more freedom out of jail, what if they run away? Or what if they don't pay? I think you'd see a lot more of this behavior than you would see criminals repaying society. Criminals of the calibre that go to prison rarely have the slightest care for society. Are you telling me that gang members would work to pay back anyone they stole from, or aulted? Be realistic here....
